The Road to Rio is looking good for Liberia. We haven’t had a boxer at the Olympic games, since Seoul Korea in ’88.Has Liberia finally found its Olympic boxing medalist? Here is a closer look at Liberian boxer Archie Weah, through a series of memes.
Archie Weah was born in Monrovia, Liberia. Like many Liberian’s fleeing the civil war, Archie and his family settled in Staten Island AKA “Little Liberia”, after a year in a Ghanaian refugee camp. He was five years-old, when he moved to New York.
There is a lot of passion behind each fist. Archie started boxing as a hobby and gradually fell in love with the sport. By 2011 he was dominating amateur boxing matches and at the end of 2013 Archie signed a professional boxing contract.
He is a light welterweight boxer and fierce competitor, who trains out of Atlanta, Georgia in the U.S.
His athletic journey has granted him the opportunity to meet boxing icons and work with successful coaches. Archie takes these encounters as chances to build and perfect his skill.
In an interview with Liberian Observer Archie stated, “I want to be the person to give life back to Liberia. I want the whole world to know my homeland. I am more than confident that with the right help I can make that happen.”
Watch out Rio, here we come. It looks like Liberia might be getting back in the ring. Caption this last photo.
