2012 OLYMPIC REWIND: Liberia’s Leymah Gbowee Carries Olympic Flag

Liberia is making an impressive mark at this year’s Summer Games. Liberian Humanitarian and Nobel Peace Prize winner Leymah Gbowee was one of the eight individuals elected to carry the Olympic Flag into London’s Olympic Stadium. The honorable event took place during the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games on Saturday July 28th. Gbowee was joined by the following:


  •  Shami Chakrabarti, one of Britain’s leading civil liberties campaigners
  • Ban-ki Moon,the United Nations Secretary General
  • Doreen Lawrence, mother of teenager Stephen Lawrence whose life was taken in 1993 exposing “institutional racism”
  • Sally Becker, known as the Angel of Mostar for rescuing children in war-torn Bosnia
  • Marina Silva, Brazilian Environmentalist campaigning for the protection of the Amazon Rain forest (note BRAZIL will be hosting the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro)
  • Haile Gebrselassie, Highly accomplished Ethiopian long distance track and road running athlete
  • Daniel Barenboim, Israeli Argentine born pianist and conductor
  • Muhammed Ali,one of the world’s greatest living sportsmen. Highly acclaimed Boxer, philanthropist and social activist

According to the Telegraph, Each person was chosen to carry the symbol of humanity because they portrayed values of the Olympic movement. Liberia’s Levi Saryee will be competing against Morocco’s Safouane Attaf at 10:12 am BST. The winner of this round will be one step closer to, the Olympic Dream, a medal.

The advanced champion will then compete against the winner of the Brazil versus Latvia match. Liberia was one of seventeen countries that received an invitation to compete in the 2012 London Olympic’s Judo Competition. below is a list of how these two athletes matchup.

Liberia’s FIRST UP: Levi Saryee

Liberia’s first athlete to take the 2012 Olympic stage is Levi Saryee. Saryee will be competing in the 81kg JUDO Match on Tuesday July 31. The event will begin at 9:30a BST and will continue throughout the day concluding at 4:20p BST.  You can view updated results and images on Saryee’s athletic page as we receive new information.Best wishes to Saryee as he represents Liberia in the JUDO match.

The Liberia Judo Federation is a member of the African Judo Union, which sits under the umbrella of the International Judo Federation. These organizations officiate all official events related to JUDO and maintain the standards and rules of the sport. Click here for more information regarding these groups.

The first Olympic event that Liberia will be participating in is the JUDO competition. We will be following Mr. Levi Saryee as he represents Liberia in the JUDO match.

Liberia is a country filled with many talented and skillful athletes. This site was created to provide information about the results of the top athletes who make up this year’s Liberian Olympic Team. We applaud and commend each athlete that has qualified to compete at such a prestigious level; and will do our best to cheer them on as they represent Our Dear Liberia.
